Music Ministry

Unity Church of Des Moines’ Music Minister, Deb Jennings, has been playing piano since age 5.  She has played in various church settings since the age of 9.  Deb has been with Unity Church of Des Moines since 2002 where she prepares and performs music for Sunday services and special events.  She accompanies soloists and groups, chooses music and does arrangements, and books special guest performers as well as accompanies or performs with them.  Deb fosters growth of talents within the congregation, working with a wide range of musical talents, from teaching solos to children to performing with experienced musicians.  Deb is strongly committed to using her talent, expertise and experience to be of service to others to develop their musical abilities and to the use of music in enhancing people’s lives.

Deb commutes to Des Moines each weekend from Omaha, Nebraska where she is the Company and School Accompanist for the Omaha Theatre Ballet Company.  She also performs one to eight times per week at retirement facilities, senior centers, hospitals, hospice homes, assisted living facilities, and rehabilitation facilities throughout the Midwest, sharing the joy of music with specialty themed programs such as standards and show tunes, sing-a-longs, and children’s programs.  She co-teaches 2 Musical Theatre classes for ages 7-16; Deb teaches the vocal parts and accompanies the students; her co-teacher teaches the choreography.

Deb spent 3 years assisting the homeless community by developing a choir at the Sienna Francis House Homeless Shelter.  The choir met weekly and performed 150 times in the community to raise awareness of the homeless situation, hunger and poverty, as well as raise funds for the shelter.

She has also been an organizer in producing and advertising concerts to promote peace, finding musicians to perform and volunteers to assist in running the events.

Deb plays for services for many different denominations at various churches and retirement homes throughout the week.  She also plays for weddings, memorial services, anniversary celebrations, fundraisers and other special events.

Deb teaches piano with students in both Omaha and Des Moines.

Deb’s educational background is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, cum laude, from Creighton University in 1980, and a Jurist Doctorate in Law, cum laude, 1986 from Creighton University.  After pursuing these career paths for many years, Deb began a spiritual journey which led her to her heart’s true desire of sharing music with the world. She is dedicated to bringing music to people, one song at a time, opening hearts to more love and more peace along the way.
